Friend or Foe?
Zack continues to chase Lola every chance he gets. However- girlfriend has begun to get feisty & she ain't takin' no junk off him- regardless of the fact that he could really hurt her if he wanted to. He just doesn't know it because she is the one in charge. It is quite funny at times. I think he knows he is annoying her because he just jumps at her & gets just close enough to disturb her. She has begun throwing herself at him, paws out (never intending to actually hit him) and he jumps back right quick. Sometimes this works to get him to leave her alone. Other times, it just fuels the flame!
Recently, she has found a new perch where she knows Zack won't come near her... He knows better than to get on our bed without an invitation. But cats don't bother with formalities. They just roam wherever they please so she has taken to....
The other place she loves is underneath our bed where there is a little holed up area that she can get to that Zack can't because of the way the bed is built. It drives him nuts! He scoots underneath there & tries to lunge at her but that is hard to do when you have to be spread eagle just to fit underneath the bed! However, if you happen to be downstairs, it sounds like the roof is caving in. I fully expect to see a 70lb dog crashing through the ceiling at some point in my life.
One evening, he actually jumped up on the bed (& took a chance at getting yelled at for doing so) because he wanted to play so bad. She was not amused in the slightest. You see she is looking right at me with the camera in my hand. She is thinking, "Get ahold of this beast!"
Please? Can't we just play?
ummm, no!
In fact, I am going to turn my back on you & you will leave me alone if you know what's good for ya!
I tell ya, it's tough being so popular... such a tough life...
It's okay, Zack... the rest of us love you!
Ugh...

He was pitiful. I got to thinking & I don't think Eli has ever had this bug. But he woke up Saturday night/Sun morning about 1am crying & when I walked around the corner he cried, "Mommy, I frowd up! I frowd up, Mommy!" I then turned around & hollered for Randy, saying, "We've got VOMIT!" I am not the vomit go to person in this family. I pay my dues in plenty of areas, but vomit has never been one of them. To say it is my phobia would be an understatement. Thankfully, Eli is a pro at hitting the trash can or toilet, so other than the initial episode (when I think it caught him off guard & it was all in the hallway AND his bed), he only hit the carpet or bedding 2 other times. Regardless though, there was plenty of laundry & lysoling going on around here for days! The first day consisted of this...
Randy snuggling with him on the couch & Zack wondering what was wrong (& getting nasty looks from Randy for sniffing all in their faces while they rested!)
Day two still consisted of snuggling on the couch, but this time he had fever & just wanted to have a TV watching marathon...
Thankfully, it passed within about 48 hours & other than a very low appetite, Eli is back up to normal speed again! Praise!
Shootin' Some Hoops
Jackson was pretty timid & shy at first (just like with baseball last summer), but went along with the others & participated in the drills...

A little love....
However. I stumbled across a cute little valentine pillow tutorial when checking in on one of my followed craft blogs. It was so adorable that I got right up & went into my craft room to see if I had the supplies on hand. I did!
I then checked the clock- Eli was napping & I had about 25 minutes before I had to leave to get Jackson from school. I decided it was fate & I needed to get crackin' on it PRONTO!
Here is the end result & i think it is so stinkin' cute!
I am thinking about making some other crafts to spice up the house for this not-so-huge holiday. Who knew a pillow could turn around your thought process, huh?
If you are interested, the tutorial is located here at V & Co......
And in case you wanted a little extra tidbit of information, I thought this pillow was so easy to put together (* she gives a great little tip for making the gather on the heart fabric!) that I made another one for Christmas that evening too! The heart one is stuffed & hand stitched closed. But on the tree one, I made it like a little sham in the back so that i can trade it out for other designs (that i see in my future.... like a shamrock!) & just use the same pillow underneath!
An apple a day....

Is that CUTE or what?? The only problem was that the seller (& every other person on etsy) only had it in a fat quarter. I knew immediately that this was the fabric I needed to use on curtains in my bay window in the kitchen. So I was going to need about 2 yards to make the valances I had in mind. I ended up finding it on ebay of all places (you can seriously find ANYTHING on ebay!) & promptly ordered 2 yards. I had it in my hands in 3 days. And then 2 days after that....
I made these!
This is the little window above the sink..

And this is the bay window.

They really brighten up the space! I knew didn't want blinds in these windows so I opted to use a tension rod (cheap!) & make the valance fit flush within the window pane. I may go back & add a ribbon or something for flair but for now, I am happy with them just the way they are! Most of my kitchen is black, white & green, but I have a lot of red in my living room & other parts of downstairs. So this fabric did the perfect job of bringing all those colors together. Yay!

Parenting Resolutions
So, I was reading a friend's blog & she had posted this on her blog after finding it in the Charlotte Observer. I agreed with it so much that I had to repost. Some of them do not apply to my kids ages, but still reflect my view on the matter. Hopefully I can stand strong when the time comes :)
15 resolutions for parents
Given that this is the first column of a new year, I'm proposing a number of parenting New Year's Resolutions for my readers to consider. The list is by no means comprehensive. It's just a good beginning on what is probably a much-needed family revolution:
1. We will not throw expensive "event parties" for our children on their birthdays. Instead, we will confine all birthday celebrations to our family, including extended family. We will keep it uncomplicated: a special dinner of the birthday boy or girl's favorite food, a cake, the song, and a few simple gifts, mostly clothing or other useful things.
2. We will spend at least as much time helping our children develop good manners as we do helping them get good grades in school, which means we will cut back significantly on the time helping with the latter (in consideration of the fact that good manners, which are expressions of respect for others, will take one further in life than will good grades). Each week, we will work on one specific social courtesy, such as saying "excuse me" when you walk in front of someone. Taking two weeks off, that's 50 courtesies a year!
3. We will show our love for our neighbors by properly disciplining our children, insisting on proper behavior, and reprimanding immediately (even if that means in front of other people) when they behave otherwise, and on those occasions we will also insist they apologize appropriately.
4 . If we have not already done so, we will assign a routine of daily chores to each of our children (at least those who have reached their third birthdays) and we will insist that the chores be done, and done properly, before they engage in recreation or relaxation.
5. When our children ask us for cell phones, we will tell them that they may have cell phones when they are able to pay for them as well as the monthly bills.
6. When our children complain that they are the only kids who don't have cell phones (and do chores), we will tell them that learning how to be different is character-building.
7. Our children will not be able to order customized meals unless we take them to a restaurant. At home, they will eat what we are eating, and they will sit at the table until they are finished. We will do this so that when they are invited to eat at someone else's home, they will be the best of guests.
8. We will surely bond with our children, but we will not bond with them in the marital bed, nor will we bond with them in their beds.
9. In keeping with number 8, we will put our marriage first and our children second, for their sake as well as ours. They will revolve around us; thus, they will not grow up thinking the world revolves around them.
10. If I am a single parent, I will take good care of myself for my sake as well as my children's. I will have an active, adults only, social life. I will take plenty of personal time to simply relax and do those things I like to do. I will do all of that so that my children will not ever think the world revolves around them.
11. We/I will put our/my children to bed early so that we/I can end each day reconnecting as a couple or relaxing as a single.
12. We will eat as a family around our own table at least six nights a week.
13 . We will keep after-school activities to a minimum, and let them enroll only in activities that do not prevent us from delivering on number 11.
14. Instead of buying our children expensive things, we will help them develop hobbies and take them to museums and on trips.
15. We will do all of the above so that when they grow up, they will have wonderful memories of their childhoods and raise our grandchildren in a manner that honors us.

Chores for the Boys
After a whole lot of picking up after the boys, constant reminders for them to do simple every day tasks like brushing their teeth, and a constantly trashed bedroom (read: Jackson!)... I decided it was time for them to take some responsibility! This family is a team & I just can't be everyone's maid anymore. Time for change!Another issue we have around here is that (Eli especially) loves to watch TV & play the gameboy. He begs for a show constantly & will not budge from the couch (won't even visit the bathroom unless we pause it) until the show is over... where he then begins to beg for a second show. I think he would love to be a professional couch potato. Randy is convinced he will be some kind of game/media developer or something! ha! And if we give him the gameboy (which we rarely do), then he will go berzerk when we say it is time to put it away despite any warnings, timers, and promises we get from him beforehand.
Well, since I already use the TV as a form of discipline from time to time (I will take his TV time away from him as a punishment), I thought I could work this into the chore system. And Jackson has been starting to buck the homework everynight, so I worked that into it as well!
I had bookmarked this blog post a while back that had a great .pdf of a chore chart that was a free download. I could even type in the kids individual chores before printing. I had been thinking of what chores I wanted the kids to be responsible for over several weeks before biting the bullet & working on a system for our house. I spent Friday evening at home, fixing these up. I printed them on regular computer paper & then mounted them onto cardstock before "laminating" them with clear contact paper.

I gave the boys each a different shade of green cardstock so they could tell whose was whose & even stamped a J and E on the backs in case they forgot (or Daddy was going over their rewards & needed to know). I also punched a hole in the top so we can hang them from hooks on the side of the fridge)

My father in law saves me his coffee tins (my coffee doesn't come in these great, classic tins!), so I put this one to work! The kids turn in their chore cards as they complete them, feeling a sense of accomplishment & keeping their motivation up.

What do they earn? Well, if they complete all their daily chores, they get a media coin and 10 cents. Remember those coins from VBS this past summer?? Well, Yep- I hung onto them & they are now coming in handy!
Media consists of 1 TV show or 30 minutes of computer (educational) / video games. They can also save & turn in 3 coins for a movie. We also added in 2 challenge chore cards as well as 2 "weekend only" chores.... I will get to that in a minute... I also printed this info onto paper & attached it to the tin so that there would be no confusion (or working one parent over the other) about what the actual rewards were! And it would keep us accountable.
They also turn in their media coins into the same tin when they are redeeming them. This way, it is all kept in one simple place. I like simplicity & no clutter!
Randy & I decided on these DAILY chores for the boys:
Mornings:
*Get dressed & brush your teeth
*make your bed
Afternoons:
*Complete homework (Jackson)
*Unload dryer or dishwasher if needed (Eli)
*Feed Zack(Jackson)
*Feed Lola (Eli)
Bedtime:
*pick up all toys (before bed) from upstairs & downstairs (includes the playroom!!) *Straighten up your bedroom
*Say prayers
BUT, there's 2 bonus (Challenge) cards for each day: OBEDIENCE & GOOD ATTITUDE. (We have been struggling in these areas for awhile now, so I thought this would be good to add to the mix for a bonus!) Each kid can earn a second media coin & extra 10cents for each day if BOTH cards are in the tin at the end of the day.
Now, onto the weekend chores.... The weekend chores came about for 2 reasons: to hold me accountable on the bed linens & hopefully make the boys more aware of a "situation" that I am personally sick of cleaning up! These are the 2 weekend chores the boys are responsible for- they only have to do it once over the entire weekend:
*Strip their sheets from their beds
*clean the bathrooms

I know you are all thinking, "WHAT? The kids have to clean the bathrooms?" Ummm, yep. Boys are nasty human beings. Trust me. And I think the grossest thing I have to do as a mother is clean up the bathroom after 2 young boys. Let's just say that aim is not their forte, and I am hoping that this will make them more aware of that. I plan to get them each a pair of rubber cleaning gloves & their own spray bottles of cleaner too! Hopefully, they will get better at "keeping the seat clean" and this won't be so nasty to deal with after a few weekends. Either way, it needs to be done each weekend (probably more often than that, really!).
So the boys not only have to work for their daily "vege out" time, but they have the potential to earn 20cents a day and an extra 10cents sometime throughout the weekend. That adds up to $1.30 a week. Sounds cheap, i know. But we are cheap & they can take that buck to the dollar store & get a treat if they want. Or save it for something bigger. I also plan to have them take their own money out of their stash for their contribution in the church offering plate each Sunday. I am hoping this will be a good way to teach them to give back to the Lord as well.
Wish us luck that this goes off without a hitch & that the rewards are motivating enough to keep them responsible!

A White Day-After Christmas!
It was so pretty & I love how snow makes everything so quiet outside. It is amazing how quiet it gets!Ready to get to work out here!
The snow was almost all the way up my boots....
They had a blast pelting each other with snow balls!
This was literally the ONLY shot i got of him standing still & i took a bazillion trying!
